Peter Doig, born in 1959, is an Edinburgh -born British artist, a master in painting the quiet and the beauty of landscapes. He was born in Scotland but spent the major part of his childhood in Canada and Trinidad Island (Caribbean), two very different environments that inspire his paintings of farm houses, frozen ponds and jungles.
His style is representative and somewhat realistic on initial appearance with an impressionistic quality to some of his work. That is why it makes him closer to the painters of the 1890s than to those of the 1990s such as the “Young British Artists”.
He uses immense canvases upon which he layers textured melancholic colour upon colour, he employs also water to reflect many of his images onto themselves, imbuing the paintings with an evocative dreamlike feeling.
There are something from Van Gogh with its deep harvest tones and texturing, from Gerhard Richter with its photographic blurring techniques and the watery purples and greens in his later Trinidad series refer to Gauguin.
This exhibition features over 100 paintings and drawing from the past two decades and emphasises his mastery of the landscape genre, a field generally not treated contemporary painting.
