Peter Doig, born in 1959, is an Edinburgh -born British artist, a master in painting the quiet and the beauty of landscapes. He was born in Scotland but spent the major part of his childhood in Canada and Trinidad Island (Caribbean), two very different environments that inspire his paintings of farm houses, frozen ponds and jungles.

His style is representative and somewhat realistic on initial appearance with an impressionistic quality to some of his work. That is why it makes him closer to the painters of the 1890s than to those of the 1990s such as the “Young British Artists”.

He uses immense canvases upon which he layers textured melancholic colour upon colour, he employs also water to reflect many of his images onto themselves, imbuing the paintings with an evocative dreamlike feeling.

There are something from Van Gogh with its deep harvest tones and texturing, from Gerhard Richter with its photographic blurring techniques and the watery purples and greens in his later Trinidad series refer to Gauguin.

This exhibition features over 100 paintings and drawing from the past two decades and emphasises his mastery of the landscape genre, a field generally not treated contemporary painting.

Sophie Calle is a French artist, a photographer, a writer and a film director. She has been using the most private moments and experiences of her life as a material for her work for more than 30 years now. She uses photos, books, videos, films, performances to tell the story of her.

Already presented at the Venice Biennale in 2007, the exhibition is recreated in the prestigious Labrouste Reading Room of the National Library.

In 2007, she published an art novel with photographs, texts and four DVDs of performances, called “Prenez soin de vous” or “Look after yourself”. This novel is based on a breakup email that she received and she didn’t how to reply. “Look after yourself” were the last words of the email.

She asked 107 women to interpret this letter as the French singer Camille or the actresses Victoria April, Jeanne Moreau. I wanted them to analyse it, give their own interpretation, provide a commentary on it, dance it, sing it, dissect it. Understand for me, reply instead of me.

It was a way to take the time that it was over.

MAN RAY exhibition in Paris at the Pinacothèque

April 3rd, 2008

« Unconcerned but not indifferent »

Wed 5 Mar 2008 - Sun 1 Jun 2008

28, Place de la Madeleine - 75008 Paris

Web Site : www.pinacotheque.com

The Pinacotheque of Paris will show one of the most famous American photographer who lived in Paris: Man Ray’s Studio. Man Ray (1890-1976) spent most of his career in Paris and his work became a large influence on the surrealist and dadaist movements. Man Ray was a genuine pioneer of modern art and a multi-faceted artist.

All the facets of the artist’s creations will be displayed, in this retrospective: drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, objects, assemblages… Most of artist’s works will be shown in public for the very first time. In fact, several of the works in the show brought directly from the Man Ray Trust (Long Island, New York).

The Trust collection is exceptional in its diversity and cohesion as it combines the various periods of Man Ray’s body of work. You will find here some little known early works, preliminary drawings, documents on his private life, documentation on major works, many masterpieces, well known or unknown images, objects he used in the making of the photograms, personal objects: his bowler hat, walking stick and various objects taken from the shelves in his Parisian studio, rue Férou. Many of these objects were the wellsprings of his creation.

Man Ray’s photographic oeuvre combines the result of surrealist painting techniques with a great imagination. Paris Dream Apartments offers furnished apartments for short term rentals close to the Pinacothèque de Paris as MATHURINS apartment.

VLAMINCK, a Fauvist Instinct

April 1st, 2008

Luxembourg Museum
From February 20 to July 20 2008
19 rue de Vaugirard,  Paris 6th,
RER: Luxembourg
Metro: Odeon
Opening times:
Monday, Friday, Saturday (10:30 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.)
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (10:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.)
Sunday (9:00 a.m. - 7 p.m.)

This great retrospective is to celebrate the 50th anniversary following the death of Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958). You should not miss this exhibition if you enjoy the Impressionists and in particular Fauvism and the works of Cézanne, a major influence on Vlaminck.

This exhibition shows works made between 1900 and 1915, paintings in which he already asserted his characteristic violence, especially with the works produced at the beginning of the First World War, which reflect his research on the rendering of space. An overview reveals the key part he played in the renewal of painting with Derain, which started in the early 20th century and which made Chatou an active centre of that renewal.

RINKO KAWAUCHI, Exhibition in Paris of “Utatane Serie”

March 31st, 2008

4. April - 3. Mai 2008
Antoine de Vilmorin Art Gallery
77, rue des Archives
75003 Paris

These photographs are part from Rinko Kawauchi’s series entitled “Utatane”, shoted in 2001. “Utatane” is a Japanese word that defines a state between wakefulness and sleep, dozing perhaps. They demonstrate the concentrated intentness with which Rinko Kawauchi is able to heed. They refer to “the little voices that have been whispering to her since childhood”.

These are the source upon which she draws, the intimate origin of a world described here according to a highly personal aesthetic: Utatane recreates a fragmentary and fleeting world in which every detail relates to notions of birth, life, death and the passage of time.

In collaboration with Galerie Priska Pasquer.
